Turning Your Garage Into An Organized Space

Every morning you probably step out into your garage and think to yourself “This could be a great space!” You may think changes would take a great deal of money and time, but it would be great to have additional living or storage space. You may have dreams of turning your basement into a family room, but with everything stored down there now, you just cannot imagine where you will put if all if you finish off the space. In frustration, the day begins and your garage remains the same as always, nothing more than storage for your car. All of that can change with just a few simple adjustments that are affordable, easy to accomplish, and only take a weekend or so to tackle. Once the revamp is complete, you will have a garage that can serve as storage space or even additional living space, if it is large enough. Start by determining what needs to change and pricing items like cantilever racking or wire partitions for storage.

Take a good look at what needs to stay in the garage and what can be sent to charity or dumped. This is the best way to determine the right kind of storage system because you will know for sure what will need to stay in the garage.

Next, figure out what needs to move from the house to the garage. If your ultimate goal is to create more living space indoors, your garage can be turned into the perfect storage receptacle and still offer plenty of room for vehicle protection. The key is to create an organization system that works for you, and to make the garage a little more homey so you do not mind spending time putting items away. Just like the rest of your house, your garage must be an inviting space if it is going to be used. If the storage is useable and everyone likes the area, it is sure to be used. This will give you more space inside for living.

Few changes will be needed in the garage to get it organized once you have purged unnecessary items. The temperature is probably regulated enough just from its proximity to the house that items will not be damaged. You may need to add some security features or make repairs, but you may already have a great storage-ready garage.

If you have decided you would like to create some additional living space in your garage, the changes needed will be a bit more dramatic but not overwhelming. You will need to make some additional insulation additions depending on the climate in which you live. You will definitely need security upgrades if there will be televisions or other electronics in the space. You will also need the space to feel as comfortable as any other in your room so family members have a desire to use it just like the other rooms.
